Art Thieves

Tue Feb 24, 2009, 1:24 PM
We all know of them. Even I, who tends to keep themselves to themselves, can't escape hearing about them.

Now, to me, there's a couple of type of art theft; the first is the obvious definition, that of someone who outright rips the work of another off, either claiming it as their own or shamelessly tracing the first few hits of an image they find on Google... that's bad enough, but the other type really, REALLY irks me...

Some people here are lucky enough to have people out there who want to commission them to do pieces for them. However, once the commission is in, these people act like Gods gift to art, not only acting above the people commissioning them (not to mention their fans), but in other instances, totally ripping people off. In other words; taking the money and running while making lame excuses and trying to make the commissioner look like the evil party for simply asking for the work they paid for.

It's pathetic on so many levels...

To those of you who are guilty of this, let me tell you a few facts; first, the money people pay for the commissions, the hard earned dollars you get from them to do a commission, isn't chump change in some cases...

One case I know of, another Deviant was given $150 to do a piece, which never materialized. $150. The artist in question acted like this was no big deal. The person requesting the commission was pretty young, and at that age, that's NOT pocket change. I'm a grown adult with bills to pay and mouths to feed in a 2 income household. I'll be honest here, even $20 can sometimes mean the difference between my family eating the few days until the next payday or not. If I got burned for $150 or more? I'd be hella pissed.

To those scamming your fellow deviants in this manner... What the fuck is wrong with you?? You have people who love your art to the point that they're willing to pay you to do one of your own characters or one of theirs. Let me reiterate: FOR MONEY. When you accept the responsibility to do this, who do you think you are to brush off that responsibility? No one cares about your "life problems". No one cares about your personal drama. You should have the integrity, if you're accepting commissions, to know your own life schedule, be willing to make adjustments, keep a client updated and deal with anything that comes up in a mature, business-like manner... not overload yourself, making empty promises about things that you'll never deliver and hiding.

You should be fucking grateful that people love your work to the point that they'll pay you nice cash for your work, not fuck them over for whatever you can get and leaving them with empty pockets with nothing in exchange, then act all high and mighty as if you're the one who's been wronged.

Hell, my art, to me at least, sucks, but I'll be the first to step up to the plate and say so. The scammer in mind, however, acts like their shit doesn't stink and that alll their fans are insolent, bothersome pests. Way to fail.

It's these people you're ripping and pissing off that you should be thanking on your knees for your popularity and the ability to even offer commissions.

You make me sick...

Just wanted to get that off my chest.

You're welcome... I found that particular piece, "A Schizophrenic's Mind" rather, interesting. Afflictions like schizophrenia and Autism/Asperger's are not something "normal" folks can understand easily, because it's very hard to see the eotion underneath that drives it for the person affected... Pieces like that one actually make it a little easier to understand and thus empathize with the underlying condition.

Keep it up, and have a great day!

Hi again, sA.... Sorry for the late reply, but I work nights, so have to catch what I can in the day... Anyway...

Again, no problem with the support. I got to know a fair number of folks with psychological disorders because I spent 12 years of my life in the business of medical transport and providing services for them. A lot of them were real gems. Very memorable.

That said, I have my own theory on disorders... *Everyone* has one. Everyone... I mean, think about it; how many times have you heard the following:

"I've had a bad day", but there seems to be no reason for it?

"My mind must have wandered off" (daydreaming)?

"Where did I put my glasses?" (and they're right on top of the person's head)?

"The word is on the tip of my tounge." (and the "word" winds up being something very simple)

The human mind is imperfect. The above stuff is just looked at on a different level because everyone shares those imperfections. When it comes to conditions like that of you and your boyfriend, people don't know how to react because NOT everyone shares the condition for one, but there's what's called a "learned response mechanism"... In other words, how we've been taught or conditioned to react to them.

Conditions like those of you and your boyfriend, people will say that he (for example) "locks out" the rest of the world, but what *I* see, is a little different; I see something *locked in*. People often make the mistake of thinking that someone who doesn't communicate well, often or even verbally a lot is somehow lacking in intelligence.

I don't think that's true at all. I think that the pathway from the intelligence to the outside is just "detoured" somehow. It's a case of finding how each individual person is detoured and working around it.

Me, for example... I have no problem explaining something, but someone who is autistic may not immediately understand the intent, tone or direction of where my words are going. I won't just throw my hands in the air and walk away; I'll sit back, and actually try to think of a better way to explain what I'm saying in a way they may be able to "get" better and try that. Everyone perceives things differently and uses different personal references to understand things, so that's how I go about it.

By the way, did you notice I tend to be a long-winded bastard? xD

Sorry, but I love to discuss things and share ideas. Although I have a DA account that's intended for photography, I'm actually primarily a writer at heart, so it comes naturally to me. Perhaps that's *my* psychological disorder (see? ;) ), but there are so few people willing to take the time to communicate in the digital age, I'm afraid :(

Anyway, look forward to your reply if you wish to make one. Hope your day goes well, and all the best.
